About this herb
Melissa Tea Leaf.
Melissa officinalis, also called Melissa Tea, Lemon Balm is a member of the mint family. The leaves of the plant release a lemony fragrance and taste when the fresh leaves are bruised. For centuries, this herb has been used to flavor wines and in cooking, most notably to enhance the flavor of fish.
The dried leaves can turn dark green and brown and lose some of their lemon scents as the newly cut leaves, this is, however, this scent and flavor are brought back to life when used to make tea, beverages, or your favorite culinary dish or infusion.
Melissa tea is a delightful beverage, enjoyed around the world, used alone or in combination with other herbs to make custom tea blends. The herb is also commonly used in homemade skin and hair tonics, soap, lotions, salves, balms, and other cosmetics, as well as natural cleaning aids for the home.
Lemon balm is the top ingredient in the famous herbal tonic and floral toilet water formulated by the Carmelite nuns in the 14th century, which is still sold in German pharmacies as "Eau de Carmes."
