Rooted in a love for herbs
All sorts of herbs and spices were around our founder Shelly’s home as a child, and she never forgot the delight of the aromas. So when she decided to go into business, she chose herbs and spices — because she knew she would enjoy putting together every package and sending it out.
What we do
A retail and wholesale herb shop
Shelly Kongo Herbs is a retail and wholesale shop for farmed and wildcrafted teas, herbs and spices. The herbs are responsibly harvested, lab tested for purity, and hand packaged. Everything sold here is grown without chemicals, pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.
Orders go out to customers as far as Sweden, Japan, France and across Africa. The catalog runs to 310 botanicals — and it grows, because customers keep asking for things.
Some of Shelly’s favourite parts of the job are the conversations with customers and slipping extra little packages of herbs into orders. The excitement the herbs bring never gets old.
Sourcing
Two ways the herbs are grown
Both terms get used loosely across the herb trade. These are the shop’s own definitions.
Farm Grown
Planted and cared for naturally — without harmful chemicals or lead-based soil. Carefully harvested, stored and packaged to maintain freshness, and handled with workflows designed to prevent cross-contamination.
Wildcrafted
Harvested in fields where they already grow naturally, without harmful chemicals. The soils are naturally fertilized, and the herbs are carefully harvested, stored and prepared in a USDA certified organic facility.
