About this herb
Dried Elderberry.
Elder is a tree in the honeysuckle family native to North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, where it can grow up to 33 ft and produces delicious berry fruit. Whole ripened Elderberry, in the natural almost black color. Elderberries have been famously used in the making of pies, pastries, jams, jellies, wine, cordials, teas, and syrup for centuries.
Elderberries contain vitamins A, and B, and are rich in vitamin C. Other nutrients in elderberry are potassium nitrate, flavonoids (rutin and quercetin), anthocyanins, sambucin, sambunigrin, palmitic acid, and chlorogenic acid. Folklore/Botanica
The Elder tree was said to possess magical powers of protection due to being inhabited by a "tree spirit" known as Elder Mother. For this reason, its wood was often used to make dowsing rods and other instruments for divination purposes.
According to the legend, cutting the bush is unwise unless first obtaining permission from the Elder Mother, a dryad or tree nymph who is said to reside in the heart of the small tree. For extra insurance, reciting “Elder Mother, please give me some wood, and I’ll give you some of mine when I grow into a tree” three times bore making a cut is sure to appease the tree spirit.
It was once believed that the Elder Mother lived inside the tree, and it was dangerous to cut the tree because her spirit may become angered. Those who did dare to cut the tree down would recite a poem to ward off her anger.
Elderberries are commonly used in spiritual protection work.
