About this herb

Solomon Seal Root, Wildcrafted.

Botanical Overview: Solomon’s Seal Root comes from the Polygonatum genus, a graceful woodland plant native to North America, Europe, and Asia. It grows in arching stems with pairs of small, bell-shaped flowers that give way to dark berries in late summer. The rhizome of the plant is the part most often used in herbal practices. The name “Solomon’s Seal” is said to come from the circular markings left on the root when the stem breaks away, resembling ancient wax seals. This visual signature was interpreted by herbalists of the past as a “seal of approval” for its effectiveness.

Traditional Herbal Use: Solomon’s Seal has a long history of use in folk herbalism and TCM. The dried root is often used to prepare tinctures, salves, and teas, and is especially valued for its use in joint, tendon, and ligament support formulas. It is considered a "moistening" herb in TCM, often used when tissues are dry or inflamed.

Topical Use: When infused in oil or alcohol, Solomon’s Seal is frequently applied externally to support connective tissue health, and to help ease discomfort from overuse, strain, or injury.

Culinary Use: Not commonly used in culinary preparations, but occasionally brewed as a gentle herbal tea.

Folklore & Energetic Uses In European herbal traditions, Solomon’s Seal is associated with wisdom, boundaries, and protection. It was often used in protective charms, particularly for grounding and sealing one’s energy. Herbalists also use it to help "seal" emotional wounds or to bring balance in times of transition.
