About this herb
White Willow bark.
White Willow Bark, often called the “original aspirin,” has been used for centuries across Europe, Asia, and Africa for its traditional wellness applications. Belonging to the Willow family (Salicaceae), this tree species is native to Europe and parts of northern Africa and central Asia, but is now naturalized across North America, where it grows abundantly in moist, temperate regions.
Taste & Preparation The bark of the White Willow tree has a slightly bitter taste, often compared to that of black tea. To improve flavor and enhance its comforting properties, it is commonly prepared: As a tea, steeped alone or blended with warming herbs like cinnamon, ginger, or clove As a tincture, by extracting in alcohol or glycerin
White Willow Bark pairs well with soothing and circulatory herbs, and is often used in herbal blends intended to support calm and relief.
Traditional Use Historically, White Willow bark was used by ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Chinese cultures, and Native American tribes to help maintain comfort in the body. Its main compound, salicin, was eventually isolated in the 1800s and became the foundation for the development of synthetic aspirin. However, natural White Willow bark is still favored by many herbalists for its gentler approach, especially when included in holistic blends for wellness and balance.
