About this herb
Cascara Sagrada bark.
Cascara Sagrada is a member of the Buckthorn family that is distributed throughout the American Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. The bark of the tree is harvested for traditional herbal supplements. Cascara bark is brewed as a very bitter tea or mixed with other flowers or fruit to chaste the bitter taste. Native Americans called the herb sacred bark and prepared the aged bark as a tea. By the mid-19th century, the pharmaceutical company Parke-Davis began producing Cascara-based products for export to Europe.
Our Cascara Sagrada bark is stripped in spring and aged for a year before processing. The bark must be aged for 12 months to allow the hydroxyanthraquinone glycosides chrysophanol, emodin, and aloe-emodin, to break down, as otherwise, these compounds would produce strong purgative effects, including intestinal cramping and vomiting. In the body, these agents are further degraded via enzymatic activity into anthrones, which are responsible for reducing transit time in the colon.
USE: Cascara Sagrada bark is bulk-forming, therefore, it must be taken with a lot of water. Boil a small amount in a large pot of water as tea, it can also be used with other herbs, flower or fruit to reduce the bitter flavor.
