About this herb
Gentian Root, cut and sifted.
Gentian root, also known as Bitter root and Gall weed, is a perennial herb native to the high grazing pastures of Alpage ( Alpen) in France, and the Himalayan mountains, the plant is a favorite in grazing for cow farmers as it is known to aid in Milk production. The Gentian roots matures in 7-10 growing season. The gentian plant produces yellow blossoms with feathery petals that look more like leaves than flowers.
Due to the bitter characteristics of the Gentian root, the plant has a long history of use as a digestive, a practice that began in the Greco-Roman period and continues today. The herb is a very bitter herb that is known as alcoholic bitters, such as the herbal bitter tonic Angostura Bitters. The bitter properties of gentian root are due to glycosides such as amarogentin, isogentisin, mangiferin, and gentiopicrin. Of particular interest is amarogentin, which is said to be the most bitter-tasting compound in the world.
