About this herb

Gravel Root, Queen of Meadows.

Gravel Root is a perennial herb belonging to the aster and daisy family (Asteraceae), found in the moist woodland areas of the northeastern United States and Canada. Known by many names, including Queen of the Meadows and Joe Pye Weed, this plant was traditionally used by Native American tribes who brewed it into a “medicine water” believed to have powerful health-supporting properties. The name “Joe Pye Weed” honors a Native healer who reportedly used the root to help colonists recover from typhoid fever.

This stately plant can reach up to 5 feet tall, with large, eye-catching clusters of pink to purple blooms that emit a sweet fragrance. The flowers bloom in late summer to early fall, attracting butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. The bitter, woody root is the part most commonly harvested for herbal use.

Traditional & Modern Uses Gravel Root contains volatile oils, tannins, and an oleoresin known as Euparin, contributing to its astringent and tonic qualities. Historically used to support the urinary system, the dried root continues to be popular in herbal practices.

Common uses include: Brewing into herbal teas and infusions Preparation of tinctures or decoctions Crafting cleansing tonics and bitter blends

Folklore & Spiritual Use In Appalachian folk magic, Gravel Root is believed to bring good luck in love and is often carried by gamblers or those seeking romantic success. It is sometimes included in mojo bags or ritual baths as part of traditional spiritual practices.
